I thought I would share a mid-season update on my tomato garden. Overall things are going well although I did end up pulling two of my ten plants. The two affected plants were Horizon variety tomatoes that started showing rapid leaf bronzing with some wilting. I initially pruned off the affected area and hoped for the best. The next day I found additional wilting and bronzing on the affected plant and then the same on the second Horizon plant. To me it looked like Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus. After a little research, I decided to pull both plants to spare the rest.
The good news is that some of my other plants are showing resistance. Those include Early Doll and Big Beef Plus which have a better disease resistance profile. I've included a couple of photos of the Early Doll plants. They have a great compact growth habit with thick stems. So far, I've gotten good fruit sets. This is a determinate variety that's supposed to have a better taste than other early maturing tomatoes. We'll see. My homemade wire cages are standing up well to the plants rapid growth.
Fortunately, my cats could care less about tomato issues. If anything, I think they enjoy watching me running around the garden tying up vines and treating the plants. I will keep everyone posted.
July update: I've had a chance to sample a few Early Doll tomatoes and I'm super impressed! They are easily the best tasting early variety I've grown with a nice balance between sweetness and acidity. They are also productive and have set a good amount of fruit. I will definitely keep Early Doll on the list for future growing seasons.
